Shahi Litchi

The Legacy of Shahi Litchi Farming in India

Litchi farming in India has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century when the fruit was introduced from China, its place of origin. The crop found an ideal home in the fertile plains of North Bihar, particularly in Muzaffarpur, which remains the heart of India’s litchi belt. Over time, cultivation expanded to other states, including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and the northeastern region. Today, India is the second-largest producer of litchi in the world, with Bihar alone contributing over 40% of the nation’s output. Among the most celebrated varieties is the Shahi Litchi, which has received Geographical Indication (GI) tag status for its exceptional sweetness, aroma, and juicy pulp.

The Pathankot Litchi from Punjab, known for its early harvest, bright red skin, and excellent shelf life, making it highly sought after in northern markets. The fruit thrives in India’s subtropical climate, and its commercial cultivation has been strengthened by government initiatives and ongoing agricultural research. With strong domestic demand and growing export potential, litchi farming remains a valuable part of India’s horticultural landscape. These litchis are grown in a naturally irrigated environment, right next to the River Ravi. Each fruit ripens on the tree, is handpicked at peak freshness, and is delivered with utmost care.

The Shahi Litchi is also known as the "Royal Jewel" of India.
